Unspoilt and uninhabited by humans, the 30 km long volcanic mountain range of
the Chyulu Hills offers unique scenic features of volcanic geology comprising
of cones and barren lava flows most popular being ‘Shaitani lava flow’.
The porous rock layers collect the rain water and take it underground to Mzima
Springs which is a major water source for the region including Mombasa City.
Diverse in its flora, the Chyulu Hills rising up to 2174m are home to Zebra, Giraffe,
Oryx, Kongoni, Elands and Lion.It is also an island of high tropical plants the
most common being the red poker tree. The area provides the Maasai herds with
grass reserves most needed during the dry periods.
Trekking in the Chyulu hills is manageable by all and ideal for aspiring Kilimanjaro
climbers who would like to get used to an African environment.
