The Ngorongoro Highlands are an eye-catching volcanic feature, associated with
the formation of the Great Rift Valley. Ngorongoro Crater is a World Heritage
Site - since 1978 and nothing short of one of the wonders of the world. The 20-Km
wide caldera with its 600-m walls is an extinct volcano thought to have once rivaled
the majesty Kilimanjaro. The views from the crater rim are incredible. It has
been compared to Noah's Ark and the Garden of Eden since in the crater one can
find a representation of virtually all species of wildlife that one expects to
see in East Africa.
Once you get down the crater floor on 4 X 4 vehicles, you will discover that
the animals do not have the crater entirely to themselves. Local Maasai tribes
people have grassing rights and you may well come across some of them tendering
their cattle.
The Olduvai Gorge nearby, where early hominoid fossils have been found is thought
to be the "birthplace of mankind". Another mystery are the irrigation
schemes of Engaruka.
