Neighboring Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares National Park is part of the Aberdares Ranges
which rise up to 4001m. It is situated about 80 km from Nairobi. The park is engrossed
with steeply sloped forested ridges separated by fast flowing streams and massive
waterfalls. Aberdares is host to the highest waterfall in Kenya - ‘Karuru
Water Falls’ that plunges 273m in three successive steps. At the forest
line, you will find Bamboo which gives way to varieties of Lobelia, Giant Groundsel
and Heather at 4000m.
The Salient is a restricted area in the Aberdares which hosts all kinds of game.
It also hosts the famous ‘Ark’ and ‘Treetops’ whose history
relates to the queen of England. A reminiscent of this is the Prince Charles Campsites.
At the salient all animals that one can expect to see in Kenya can be found, even
the almost extinct Rhino. The beautiful scenery of the high altitudes and the
magnificent view of Mt. Kenya add something special and unique to the game drives.
The vast thickets of the Aberdares host the caves which were once hideouts for
the ‘ Mau Mau’ freedom fighters.
