Amboseli National Park

• 392 sq km
• about 1100 m (sea level)
• Kilimanjaro backdrop
• over 1000 Elephants
• Lions, Cheetah, Hyenas
• Plains game
• 400 bird species

Though not one of the largest wildlife conservation areas in Kenya, Amboseli is the second most popular National Park next to the Maasai Mara. This is mainly because of the spectacular backdrop of Africa’s highest Mountain, the Kilimanjaro, against which you will be sure to see large herds of elephants. There are over 100O elephants in this area of 397 sq km besides a rich variety of other plains game. The park also hosts lions and cheetahs but spotting them requires some patience. The bird life here includes Pelicans, Fish Eagle, Bee Eater and Pygmy Falcons. There are over 400 different species in the area.

Amboseli means "Place of Water" in the Maasai Language. This precious resource which forms the center of the parks ecosystem is filtered through porous volcanic rock after melting from the glaciers of Kilimanjaro. This water not only sustains a large variety of wildlife but also is the lifeline for the Maasai Herdsman who lives around the park. These Herdsmen, richly decorated and steeped in traditional culture are part and parcel of the ageless Africa.
