Arusha National Park is one of the smallest and most beautiful of the Tanzanian
National Parks. Its main features are the Ngurdoto Crater also dubbed the Little
Ngorongoro, the Momella Lakes and the rugged Mt. Meru (4556m). Because of the
differing altitudes and the geological structure, there are several vegetation
types which support an abundant wildlife. Among the species to be seen in this
park are the Burchell's zebra, Buffaloes, Elephants and a variety of plains game
besides baboons and Colubus Monkeys.
The Momella lakes like many Rift valley lakes are shallow and alkaline. This attracts
a variety of water birds the most pronounced being the Flamingoes which feed on
the algae growth. The Ngurdoto crater now extinct while the Mt Meru is dormant
having last erupted just 100 years ago.
