The Chyulu Hills which rise up to 2174m are a volcanic geological outcrop covered
by a scenic and mysterious rainforests. They were born out of the earth only 500
years ago and now hosts most unique scenic features, a rare tropical plant life
and wonderful views of Mt Kilimanjaro. The environment which is ideal for hiking
is home to numerous species of wildlife including zebras, giraffes, Oryx, gerenuk,
kongonis, topi, impala and elands. 34 species of large mammals have been spotted
and recorded. The frequent sighting of lion and cheetah have added to the excitement
of this area. Perhaps the greatest charm, however, lies in the vast and mainly
uninhabited panorama dominated by the snow capped Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The beautiful hills are bordered by an expanse of black lava flow known as Sheitani
(Devil) which originates from one of the hills and is a subject in many local
legends. The porous volcanic hills filter the rain water which resurfaces in Tsavo
west at the Mzima Springs, the main water source of the coastal towns of Mombasa
and Malindi.
