Meru National Park is one of the best watered sanctuaries in Kenya. The permanent streams from Mt. Kenya and abundant rainfall support a luxuriant jungle forest, swamps and tall grasses which provide fodder and shelter for a variety of herbivores and their predators. Due to the lush vegetation the game is more difficult to spot but with some patients elephants, lions and cheetahs can be seen, while buffaloes, giraffes, oryx and elands are very common.

Meru National Park lies at an altitude of 300 to about 1000m and covers an area of 870 square kilometers. The park was the setting for Joy Adamson's book " BORN FREE" that chronicles an in depth study of lions and cheetahs. In 1968 the area was officially gazetted as one of Kenya's National Parks in an effort to conserve this heritage.
