Elgon is the 4th highest mountain in East Africa and its highest peak, Waggagai
is inside Uganda... The National parks biggest attraction apart from climbing
and hiking are the elephants, renowned the world over for their predilection for
salt. This takes them to the caves where this saline is found in plentiful. The
biggest of these caves is the Kitum, but also there are other spectacular ones
at Chepnyali and Mackingeny. Apart from elephants, buffaloes, gazelles and waterbucks
can be seen. There are also leopards but these rather shy animals are difficult
to trace in the thick forest.
Kitum cave was once wrongly associated with the fatal Ebola virus which had surfaced
in different locations in Central Africa. Thousands of visitors have since visited
this spectacular site proofing the film makers and journalists wrong and serving
to market the destinstion even more.
