The Lake Nakuru National Park was created in 1961 and covers an area of 200
sq km. It is probably the world’s biggest ornithological spectacle with
millions of flamingoes along the shallow shoreline. Since the park covers grassland
and forests, plenty of plains game, lions and rhinos can be seen. The forest
area is the ideal habitat for baboons and giant warthogs. On the cliffs, hyrax
and birds of prey are found.
The park provides a sanctuary for endangered wildlife such as the white and
black Rhino. Today more than 25 Rhinos inhabit the park, one of the largest
concentrations in the country. In another effort to protect endangered wildlife
the Rothschild Giraffe has been translocated to the park. Besides two lodges,
there are self-catering bandas and campsites.
