There is an area of about 300 sq km along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River set
aside for wildlife consisting of Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba conservation
areas. The area is mostly savanna plains and scrub dessert. The harsh climatic
conditions harbor some very unique species which have adapted to the semi dessert
area. They are the reticulated giraffe, the grevy’s zebra and the rare Somali
Ostrich. On the sandy river banks one can find crocodiles and the sighting of lions
and elephants is guaranteed. The park houses also leopards, buffaloes, and several
species of gazelles.
Joy Adamson and her husband George, who lived here greatly contributed to Kenya's
wildlife conservation as authors, through art and research on lions and cheetahs.
Samburu Game Reserve has featured in many films including "Sheena, Queen
of the Jungle”.
