Tsavo is the largest National Park in Kenya with an area of 20 000 sq km. With
its abundant big number of wild animals, Tsavo is also known for its "Red Elephants "
because of the soil that colours them so and its man-eating lions legend besides a colorful bird life and
a spectacular bio-diversity. The park is divided into two sections, the Tsavo
East and the Tsavo West. . In Tsavo East, the result of volcanic activity is strikingly
characterized by the Mudanda Rock. The 1½ km long of stratified rock is
a water catchment area, supplying a dam at its base. This is a meeting point for
a variety of game during the dry season such as Elephants, Buffalo, Lions, Hippos,
Leopards, Crocodiles, Waterbucks, and plenty of plains game.
Tsavo East occupies its place in the folklore as a place where 2 lions
killed and ate close to 40 Engineers and their crew who were constructing the
Kenya - Uganda Railway during the turn of the century. The " Man Eaters of
Tsavo " nearly brought the construction work to a halt.
