Tsavo West harbors Mzima Springs, the main water source for Mombasa city and here
numerous Hippos and crocodiles are to be found. In an effort to conserve the endangered
Rhino species, a sanctuary has been established. One of the outstanding features
in this game sanctuary is the huge population of red elephants which derive their
red coloring from the rich red earth from the park. The park has well over hundred
species of birds which include ostrich, buzzards and the migratory kestrel.
Other outstanding features worth seeing include cave and geological formations,
Shetani Lava Flow and Mzima Springs underwater observatory. The chaimu crater
just south of Kilaguni Lodge can also be climbed, one of the rare opportunities
where you can get out of the vehicle inside a National Park.
